2 Regarding features/technology

What are the consumer benefits of PictBridge?
PictBridge ensures compatibility across digital still cameras and printers and enables users to easily perform operations using the camera, regardless of brand, giving consumers the flexibility and simplicity to create high-quality photos.

How is PictBridge different from the direct print solutions that exist today?
Until now, each company had its own proprietary solution for direct printing -- without a computer -- between digital still cameras and printers. This solution has proven to be limiting for consumers, as they are unable to achieve the same convenience and ease of use when using a combination of products of different brands. Provided both digital still camera and printer are PictBridge -enabled, direct printing would be made possible regardless of the brand.

Are the current proprietary systems that each company now uses going to be unified into PictBridge?
Although the decision is up to each individual company, there is the possibility that each company will offer proprietary systems along with PictBridge.

What are the technical advantages of PictBridge?
Since only the application layer is specified, a vendor can easily adopt PictBridge. Additionally, it is also possible to expand PictBridge to other interfaces beyond USB in the future.

What are the benefits of PictBridge to vendors?
It is expected to grow the digital imaging industry by offering wider choices to consumers through PictBridge-compliant products/solutions.

Is PictBridge able to comply for other devices that have a function to take still images, such as camcorders, PDAs and mobile phones?
It is possibly adopted by any input/output device which is able to deal with digital still images.

Is it possible to add PictBridge functionality on existing digital still cameras or printers?
It is possible when the device allows firmware version upgrades and has the necessary hardware features, such as a USB port. However, it will ultimately depend on each company's decision.

Has PictBridge used any new technology in creating this standard?
New technology was used to enable to print by sending command from a digital still camera without a personal computer. Provided both digital still camera and printer are PictBridge - enabled, direct printing would be easily made possible regardless of the brand.

Did each company provide any particular technology for PictBridge?
CIPA heard that six companies contributed to solve problems together by bringing suitable technologies and ideas, and then deliberated to find a better solution when they created their specification. CIPA evaluated the validity of their proposal technically and admitted it as a CIPA standard.

Why does PictBridge use USB?
USB is most suitable for data transmission in the current digital imaging market because it is widely used in digital still cameras and printers. While PictBridge uses the existing interface, it is independent from any physical transport as the basic concept.

Is PictBridge compatible with USB 2.0 hi-speed?
PictBridge does not rely on the physical layer so it does not depend on the USB version. It defines only the application layer.

Is PictBridge compatible to USB OTG?
PictBridge does not rely on the physical layer. It defines only the application layer. As such, it does not depend on the USB version.
